How to work on the same Markdown file as an AI agent

Quick answer

Open the .md file your AI agent works on in MD Editor for Windows and keep it open. MD Editor saves your edits to the file as you type, so the agent reads your latest text. When the agent changes the file, MD Editor shows the new version. If you have unsaved edits, it asks whether to keep both versions, use the one on disk, or keep yours.

Step by step

  1. Get MD Editor for Windows

MD Editor is free and needs no account. It runs on Windows 10 and Windows 11.

    • Coming to the Microsoft Store
  2. Open the file your agent works on

Open the .md file from File Explorer, drag it into the window, or choose Open… in the File menu. It can be a plan, notes, or an instruction file such as CLAUDE.md or AGENTS.md.

  3. Keep it open while the agent works

When the agent changes the file and you have no unsaved edits, MD Editor shows the new version with the notice Updated from disk, and you can undo the change. If you have unsaved edits, it asks you to choose Keep Both, Use Disk Version or Keep My Edits. Keep Both is the default.

What MD Editor does with a shared file

  • Saves your edits to the file as you type, so the agent reads your latest text.
  • Notices when another app or an AI tool changes the file you have open, and shows the new version.
  • Never overwrites the other version: with unsaved edits, you choose what to keep.
  • Split view (Ctrl+2) shows the Markdown and the page side by side as the file grows.
  • Opens plain .md files where they are: no import, no library and no account.

Questions

Which AI agents does it work with?

Any tool that edits .md files on your computer, such as Claude Code or Codex. MD Editor watches the file, not the tool.

Does the Android app notice changes?

No. The Android app does not reload a file when another app changes it. The coming MD Editor for Mac notices changes the way the Windows app does.

Is MD Editor free?

Yes, it's free, with no ads and no in-app purchases. You don't need an account.

Free. No account, no tracking, no ads.
